Dear Valued Mooikloof Companion Animal Centre Client,
There’s a lot to know about Covid-19, but it’s important to us that our clients understand that pets do NOT get or transmit Covid-19.
On 24 March 2020, President Ramaphosa announced that South Africa will be placed under a National Lockdown in order to slow down the spread of Covid-19. Since then, we have implemented a number of operational changes in order to continue to provide the best care for our precious guests and patients, continue to support our staff and to do our part in “flattening the curve”.
As of 1 May 2020, we have been scaled into Alert Level 4 (as opposed to the previous Level 5) of the national Lockdown. Please continue reading to see our updated service offerings and social-distancing protocols.
If you have an urgent need to board your pet/s during this time (due to illness or adverse circumstances), please contact us and we will assist you. We have a dedicated group of staff being accommodated on the premises who are determined to provide our same excellent care to our precious guests and patients during this time.
In terms of transport and/or deliveries; we are able to assist in the event that:
- You are unable to bring you pet/s in for veterinary appointments.
- You are unable to look after your pet/s at home.
- You are unable to collect food or medication for your pet/s.
These services will only be provided if deemed essential; please call us with any requests/queries on +(27)12 480 2031.

Therapeutic Enrichment
Many dog owners have been concerned about the mental health of their dogs during the lockdown period. Not being able to go for walks or visit parks means that many pups haven’t been getting as much exercise and mental stimulation as they’re used to. This has the potential to cause a significant decrease in quality of life and welfare for the animals as well as the possibility of some pets developing anxiety disorders. Fortunately, in Level 4, dog owners are now allowed to walk their dogs between 6am and 9am within a 5km radius of their home. For many dogs this will greatly improve their quality of life and well-being, and we are so grateful for that!
For some, however, this type of walking may not be feasible or even possible. Mooikloof Companion Animal Centre would like to reach out to these dogs and their owners, as we have the appropriate space available for dogs to enjoy both on-lead and off-lead exercise/play in a safe and fun environment.
We’d like to make it clear that we are not simply opening our doors to the public for recreation. This service will only be available to those who are unable to provide suitable physical and environmental enrichment for their dogs, and those dogs who are at risk of developing anxiety disorders as a result.
Clients will need to book a telephone consultation with one of our vets at the Mooikloof Animal Hospital on (+27)12 480 2031 or vet@mcac.africa. Our vets will determine whether it is necessary for the dog and their owner to make use of our premises for this purpose. Only cases that are identified as such, will have access to the play and exercise areas on our premises at a scheduled date and time, as well as under strict conditions of social distancing and hygiene measures.
We will decide with you which area/activity would be best suited for and safest for your doggo. Our options include grassy enclosures, swimming ponds, sandpits, climbing frames and a large enclosed ‘veld’.
Please contact us at bookings@mcac.africa or (+27)67 823 9443 to find out more about this service, the fee structure, social distancing protocol and how we can help you to take care of your pet’s mental health during this time.
Once again, we would like to remind you that there is no existing proof that domestic animals can transmit Covid-19 to humans.
Please help us contain the spread of Covid-19 by complying with the above-mentioned procedures.
Thank you for your support and understanding. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions or queries.
